Expelled: a lesson in suppression
PZ Myers, scientist and author of the famous Pharyngula blog, was recently prevented from attending a screening of a documentary movie in which he appears. The movie is called Expelled. How ironic.
The movie is a piece of propaganda on behalf of creation science (yes, that old oxymoron). It seems that Myers and others, including Richard Dawkins, had been deliberately misled about the nature of the movie when they agreed to appear in it. The film purports to show that creation scientists are being oppressed. Apparently, the movie’s producers feel that lies are the best way to further their struggle for freedom of speech.
Anyway, Myers was standing in line outside the theatre, with Dawkins and others, when goons from the movie’s production company informed him he would have to leave. The same goons failed to spot Dawkins. No-one said creationists had to be smart.
This phenomenal PR gaff has been reported right across the blogosphere, so rather than repeat too much of what has already been said, here are some links:
- Richard Dawkins talks about the expulsion of PZ Myers and reviews the movie.
- Greg Laden’s blog has a roundup of other blog posts on the subject.
- Naturally, Mr Myers has covered the event in detail at Pharyngula
And here’s a video of the two gents discussing what must count as the biggest PR cock-up of the decade:
