"Because I don't believe in God," I said. The most common reply was: "What's that got to do with it?" It turned out that of all the married people I know, virtually all of them had married in church and virtually none of them were believers, but they didn't have a problem with that double-think. I did, though - it seems to me not only disrespectful to believers to use their house of worship as nothing but a pretty backdrop, but it would also be a denial of my atheism to have married in a church when I just don't believe a word of it.
