Please don't allow these ridiculous, many-times-debunked “atheist Nazi” slurs allow the Pope to deflect the main issue that everyone should be pressing him on during his state visit: the ongoing protection of child rapists and torturers. Regardless how calculated the Nazism slur may be, we must not give the Vatican the comfortable reprieve of discussing this silly issue when the much more pressing issue of investigating rapist priests deserves our full voice.

Thanks for the article – beautifully succinct. I constantly read that Hitler’s staff and troops were atheists – many of the people who write this tosh must know the truth. The ‘Gott mit Uns’ badges are all over the internet. Hitler never renounced his Catholicism, although he wanted the Church to adopt his racist coda, which did lead to trouble with some of the Catholic hierarchy. Hitler’s death camp guards shovelled bodies during the week, and went home at weekends to Mass on Sunday while others – worse given Luther’s rabid antisemitism – to their Lutheran Churches. No Christian church appears to have tackled this terrible dilemma properly – that the Jews were exterminated by Christians; I’ll write it again by CHRISTIANS. And here comes the Pope to UK, telling us off like children. It is difficult not to become enraged by the spectacle.

Thad, Most of the articles I’ve seen about Uganda and its abstinence policy point out that the lower infection rate has a number of societal factors. Of course, it’s typical of the Catholic church to take the credit and claim it is all due to faith-based abstinence. And the sources that take this stance seem to be those coming from a religious perspective. Maybe you need to read a little more widely, although I suspect that someone with a marian.org email address is likely to be swayed by something as trivial as facts.

Just curious – in response to your last paragraph – I recently read an article on the success of Catholic countries (Uganda, I believe?) in Africa in lowering aids through abstinence. The statistics of other countries show that after condoms were introduced, the incidence of AIDS increased instead of decreasing. How does that account for the Catholic teaching vs. the secular view that condoms help?

There is one simple but important problem that you have left out: Jesus’ chromosomes. First we need to make two assumptions, both clearly affirmed in the Bible. 1. Jesus was on earth in corporeal form, he was “made man” (‘man’ in the generic sense, i.e. human). 2. His mother was a virgin. Clearly he received his X chromosome from his mother, the Virgin Mary, but to be a man you also need a Y chromosome, which can come only from one’s biological father. But if his was a virgin birth, Jesus could not have received a Y chromosome, and hence could not have been a man. This provides firm support for those who believe that Jesus was a woman.

Rembrandt (one of my personal favorite artists) created magnificent works of art illustrating the Bible….and magnificent works of art illustrating Greek mythology.

Which, naturally, means both Christian and Greek pantheons are real.

We read over the study in our community freethinker group. I don’t agree with all of his conclusions, either, but overall, it is definitely interesting stuff on the global scale. On the national scale, the higher religiosity within a state, the higher the abortion rate, divorce rate, etc. Pretty interesting studies for the pro-life crowd.

Might I suggest The Counter-Creationist Handbook?
It lists a lot of the ‘arguments’ creationists put forward against evolution and offers evidence against them.
It’s very well structured with each creationist non-argument being given its own code so you can find it easier later, also the arguments are arranged into groups of similar material.
